TYPEFACE DESIGN

PROJECT OVERVIEW

For this project we were tasked with creating our own fonts. We had to create three different fonts variations using an anagram for our own first and last name. The anagram that I chose was “UNEARNED SLUG”, which is my full name rearranged. I spent time looking at fonts and styles that I thought were interesting and starting sketching out letters and built upon them, as I would discover shapes and angles that made a letter look unique. To the right are the three different fonts style I came up with. I  tried to make all three very different. I have ones with serifs and without, slanted and even rounded.

This next phase of the project was to then choose one of our fonts and create a font family. It was tricky figuring out how to take a style and apply it to even capital letters and italics, but I think the font I went with was able to vary nicely. I focused on keeping continuous shapes and quirks of each letter seen throughout so the family would appear unified.
This next project was inspired directly from our fonts as well. I was tasked with creating posters only in black and white for my font, but we had to use the entire anagram in each poster, so all the letters had to be used. This project was useful in helping to learn how to harness white space and create visual balance as well as taught me some interesting tricks in illustrator.
